The Idea

:

ONE VOICE CHORUS @ the Global Village School (GVS) in Decatur GA.
The Repertoire: songs from Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, and Central African Republic (the students' home cultures) PLUS our own original songs, and classic american peace and justice anthems.

The Specifics

GVS is a school for teenage refugee girls from Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, and Central African Republic. We want to create a chorus to become the public face of the school and to leverage further funding for this unique institution that serves girls whose formal education has been interrupted by war and refugee camp experiences. Music is an important part of the GVS innovative curriculum, and the One Voice Chorus will reflect both the diversity of the student population and the effectiveness of music as a tool for learning English as well as Science, Math, and Social Studies.

Elise Witt is a phenomenal artist and teacher and I have seen her make a tremendous difference in the lives she touches. Education, healing and empowerment of girls who come from a background of hopelessness -- what could be more important for the progress of our world?

both girls and boys are the future of our world. Let's give these girls a chance to have an education. Music is the best language to speak to the hearts and minds of all peoples -including the ones you want money/support from. Also, I have taken music classes form Elise and I can see she is honorable and talented. This is the project to support.

I went to see these guys do a concert- it was incredibly moving and inspiring- to everyone in the room!!! Put kids and music together with the themes of unity, caring, community, and peace and that will change the world. This kindof experience gets adults straight at the heart which is where change needs to happen first.

I have never seen any project more deserving than the Global Village School One Voice Chorus. I have watched Elise Witt change so many lives (including mine) through her energy and songs. Georgia especially, is in dire need of an inclusive community movement powered by musical arts. These young women need this project! If I could vote a million times, I would.

This is a wonderful idea! Elise is one of the best teachers of collaborating musicians I have ever known. This work with refugee children from all over the world is a true unifying force for humanity. We collectively need to see much more of this kind of thing as the love vibration it sends out is essential to the well being of all!

I can't think of anything that is as personal and yet as universal as music, and I can't think of anyone who is more skilled in helping people connect through music than Elise Witt.

i have known Elise for 22 years and I can confidently say that any endeavor she is involved with will be imbued with joy, growth and integrity. This will be a two-way exchange: both the girls AND we will benefit from this idea. By Fred Stewart

Music brings joy to our students and all those who hear them. The One Voice program offers them opportunities to learn, share, teach, and communicate in a language we can all understand. We are all connected in their One Voice. I am so thankful for Elise and the beautiful music our students make with her!

Hearing the students sing last week, a woman came up to us in tears. "I work with Refugee Resettlement Network" here in Atlanta, and I know these young women when they arrive here. To see them on stage with such confidence and presence is nothing short of a miracle - it's the music!!"

Elise invited me to teach guitar to two of the girls, and the light in Soe Mae's eyes this morning as she told me about the concert last week was so bright. These girls are learning so much and are so resilient. The music program at Global Village School is making a HUGE difference. Ann
